Local reports describe observed conditions. The weather forecast is shown separately; it does not establish piste quality or snow cover.

The illustration connects the three views. It is a schematic, not a route map or a picture of current snow cover.

The 2,300, 2,700 and 3,200 m forecasts are altitude-adjusted samples at one representative Val Thorens location, not three weather stations. The 3,200 m sample is not a separate forecast for Cime Caron or Orelle. The combined Val Thorens–Orelle area publishes a highest ski altitude of 3,230 m.

How we calculate this

Wet-bulb: Stull (2011), a near sea-level approximation. Alpine pressure effects and very cold, dry conditions limit accuracy. Potential hours use a −2°C threshold; equipment, water and operating decisions remain unknown. Snow balance uses wet-bulb precipitation partition and a configurable degree-day melt factor. Uncalibrated research model.

How this comparison works+

Daily comparison selects the nearest stored issue to 24 hours earlier (within 6 hours); weekly uses 7 days (within 12 hours). At least six consecutive future hours must match. Source and model version must agree. The comparison describes changes in that forecast period.

This view uses a single forecast. Probabilities and historical accuracy scores are not available.

Reading the forecast

How much snow is forecast for Val Thorens?

Snowfall is shown as water content in millimetres. Totals cover complete forecast periods. If the operator reports measured fresh-snow depth, it appears separately in the official snow report.

What is the snow depth in Val Thorens?

Measured snow depth is separate from this forecast. Check the official report for measurements when available, including their location and time.

How far ahead can I plan?

The overview covers the next 48 hours. Each forecast shows its available period.

Where does the forecast come from?

Weather forecasts come from MET Norway Locationforecast. Each altitude band links to its source and shows the provider issue time and our retrieval time. Forecasts issued more than 24 hours ago are excluded from this overview.

Open snow slopes surround a dense, stepped village beneath broken rocky ridges. The illustration combines these local features into an original schematic; it does not show actual pistes, summit positions or the route to Orelle. Use the official map for navigation.

Before your ski day

Does Val Thorens have 150 km or 600 km of pistes?

The 150 km figure describes the linked Val Thorens–Orelle ski area. The 600 km figure belongs to the larger Les 3 Vallées domain. Neither is a Val Thorens-only total. Use the official map and the coverage of your chosen pass when planning a day beyond the local area.[1][2]

Do the Val Thorens lift reports include Orelle?

The regional report groups Val Thorens and Orelle, but Les 3 Vallées also publishes separate destination report pages. The available Val Thorens page does not establish which Orelle lifts, if any, are included in its inventory. PisteWindow therefore keeps the source’s Val Thorens label and does not treat it as a verified count for the whole 150 km area.[3][8]

Can I use the opening map to plan a return from another valley?

Check the official report and the closing times of the links before setting out. Val Thorens warns that outside operating hours its map shows anticipated openings. A planned opening is not confirmation that a lift is running now; a report without a verified observation time also cannot establish current access.[5][3]

Is a snowfall value the same as the snow depth in Val Thorens?

No. Snowfall and total snow depth measure different things. The Les 3 Vallées weather page separates snowfall from the date of the last snowfall and gives a page update date. A dated past snowfall is not today’s snow depth, and a page update date alone does not verify when each value was measured. PisteWindow only presents a depth when the source explicitly identifies it as such.[4]

Where can beginners start in Val Thorens?

The official guide identifies two Easy Rider areas, including a zone by the Castor and Pollux conveyor lifts. Start with the beginner-area guide and the current map to choose a suitable meeting point. Check which lifts and pistes are operating before heading to a different part of the mountain.[6][2][3]
